8 Tips for
Launching a Company Intranet
By Jeff
Wuorio Reprinted with permission from the Microsoft Small Business
Center

Many business owners get
it when it comes to the influence and reach of the Internet. But
what they may not fully appreciate is how that medium can be used
exclusively within their own business.
Planning and programming
an intranet — an internal Web site restricted to those within your
company — can prove a boon to communication, project management and
a host of other responsibilities. But using it effectively means
more than building it, plugging it in, and letting it
rock.
With software such as
Windows SharePoint Services, a private Web site could also easily be
converted into an "extranet," which is a restricted site that serves
an internal audience but also allows in selected outside partners
and others. Extranets are particularly useful when outside vendors
are key members of project teams.
Here are eight dos and
don'ts for launching an intranet (or extranet).

Team ITS to "Race for the Cure"
Starting in 2006,
IT Solutions adopted a charity to raise money and awareness
for an important cause. We believed that by selecting one
cause to work for, we could make the biggest difference. After
much internal discussion, we decided to support the Susan G.
Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. As we did last year, we’re
asking for your help again in 2007.
The Komen
Foundation is one of the largest cancer foundations in the
country and has raised hundreds of millions of dollars
worldwide in support of breast cancer research. One of the
primary ways the foundation uses to raise funds is its annual
Race for the Cure.
The Philadelphia
Race for the Cure will be held on Mother's Day, May 13th,
2007, starting at the Art Museum in Philadelphia. The 5K race
(a little over 3 miles) or walk begins at 8:15 a.m. Last year,
almost 40,000 people ran or walked in the event and raised
more than $3 million. With your help, IT Solutions raised over
$13,000 and finished in the Top 10 fundraisers out of more
than 700 teams that participated.
As a company, we
are forming another race team that will consist of ITS
employees, friends and family, clients, vendors, and anyone
else who wants to be a part of the effort. There is no limit
to the team size. Participation includes walking or running in
the race, making a pledge to someone in the race, or making a
direct donation to the team.
For our part, IT
Solutions will match the first $10,000 of pledges and
donations made on behalf of our team. Our ultimate goal last
year was to use this matching money to become an official race
sponsor in 2007 and turn this into an annual mission. We
succeeded in this goal and believe that we have a great chance
to accomplish this goal again with your help.
Our team has
already been formed online (Team Code "IT Solutions") and you
can join the team by going to http://rfcphl.convio.net/goto/ITSolutions
and signing up as a runner or walker, pledge participant, or
online donor. Just remember to use the "IT Solutions" team
code so your donation will be matched.
Feel free to pass
this notification on to as many people as you like. The more
people we get involved in this effort, the better. If you have
any questions about the event or about the Komen Foundation in
general, please contact Lauren Kane at lauren.kane@itsolutions-inc.com
or 215-886-7166 x39.
Thanks for your
support,
Ted Swanson,

Story:
Distinguished
Builder Constructs Reliable Technology Foundation with IT
Solutions
Background When it comes to
quality home construction, New Jersey's Paramount Homes
considers itself second to none. Founded in 1995, Paramount's
guiding principle is "Reaching for Excellence" and that's
apparent in everything they do, from luxurious single family
homes to urban redevelopment areas to active adult lifestyle
communities. No matter what the project, customers find the
company's same commitment to being the best in all of
their work.
The
Challenge Before Paramount
connected with IT Solutions, the company was experiencing fast
growth and more complex technology support needs but was
struggling with keeping pace through existing resources.
Issues that were causing the most frustration were offsite
e-mail hosting through an Internet Service Provider and
inefficient backups and disaster recovery techniques. At the
time, backups were being handled on a
workstation-by-workstation basis, which required significant
manual labor that was time consuming and not as reliable as
centralized server-driven disaster recovery.
