What to Work Out Before You Move

Cloud decisions get made under time pressure, usually when hardware or a contract forces the issue. These are the five questions worth answering first.

Should we move off our aging on-premises servers?

Usually, though not always. IT Solutions Technology Partners starts with an assessment of the current environment: which workloads are good candidates, which applications have licensing or latency constraints, what the hardware refresh would otherwise cost, and where risk sits today. That produces a migration roadmap rather than an all-or-nothing decision.

Is public cloud or private cloud right for us?

It depends on the workload rather than the organization. ITS places line-of-business applications, regulated data, and systems with specific performance or licensing needs where each fits best, which often means a hybrid result: some workloads in public cloud, others hosted on the ITS Private Cloud, are connected so that users experience one environment.

How do we migrate without taking the business offline?

Sequencing does most of the work. ITS migrations follow cloud adoption framework standards: discovery and dependency mapping first, then a migration plan that moves workloads in groups, secure data transfer with validation at each stage, and cutover scheduled around the organization’s calendar rather than the project’s.

Our cloud costs keep climbing. Can that be controlled?

Yes, through governance rather than one-time cleanup. ITS cloud management covers resource right-sizing, identifying what is provisioned but unused, license optimization, and cost reporting that ties spend back to the systems producing it. Consumption-based infrastructure grows quietly unless someone owns the review.

Who runs the environment after the migration is finished?

ITS does, where the client wants that. Cloud management from ITS includes proactive monitoring and maintenance, server backups, patching, security and compliance oversight, and capacity planning as demand changes. Q: Is private cloud more secure than public cloud?

A: Not inherently. Both models can be configured securely or insecurely, and most breaches trace to configuration, access control, or credentials rather than to the hosting model. What differs is control: private cloud gives an organization more say over infrastructure configuration and data location, while public cloud shifts more of that responsibility to the platform provider. IT Solutions Technology Partners places workloads based on requirements rather than on a general claim about either model.

Q: What is the ITS Private Cloud?

A: ITS’ Private Cloud is the private cloud hosting platform operated by IT Solutions Technology Partners. Client environments run on ITS enterprise infrastructure in ITS datacenters, each with its own virtual datacenter, virtual firewall, and network connectivity, isolated through network segmentation and role-based access control. ITS personnel manage the platform around the clock.

Q: What does working with a Cloud Solutions Provider change about our Microsoft licensing?

A: A Cloud Solutions Provider procures and manages Microsoft cloud licensing on a client’s behalf. Licenses sit in the client’s own tenant, and ITS administers them through delegated access: provisioning, assignment, renewal, and optimization against actual usage. Billing is consolidated and support is included rather than purchased as an add-on.

Q: How long does a cloud migration take?

A: It depends on the number of workloads, their dependencies, and how much has to be rebuilt rather than moved. The assessment phase establishes the timeline before work begins, which is the point of running one. ITS migrations are phased rather than executed in a single cutover, so a longer overall project usually means less disruption on any given day.

Q: What happens to our environment if we stop working with ITS?

A: Offboarding is scoped as a project, in the same way migration is. One constraint is worth knowing in advance: virtual machines licensed through the hosting platform’s Microsoft licensing program cannot simply be exported and run elsewhere, because that licensing is not portable off the infrastructure it was provided on. ITS raises this during planning rather than at the end.

Q: Does moving to the cloud reduce IT costs?

A: Sometimes, and not automatically. Cloud removes the capital cost of replacing server hardware and the facilities cost of running it, and converts spend into an operating expense. Whether the total falls depends on how the environment is sized and governed afterward. Consumption-based infrastructure grows quietly when nobody reviews it, which is why ITS treats cost governance as part of ongoing cloud management.
