Overview
Advanced Windows Server Patch Management is a structured patching service designed for business-critical Windows servers that the client requests elevated change control, coordinated maintenance, and additional post‑patch validation.
Our standard Windows Server patching service, included in Total IT and Amplify IT and services where ITS is managing the Windows Servers, follows a predefined schedule to patch and reboot devices automatically. Our Advanced Windows Server Patch Management incorporates enhanced client communication, verified backups, manual patch sequencing, and validation testing to reduce operational risk for sensitive workloads.
This service is intended for Windows Server. The service can be extended to critical workstations running Windows 11 Operating System supporting line of business applications, regulated systems, or environments with low tolerance for disruption, where patching must be performed deliberately. In all instances, the device must be covered by ITS for monitoring, patching, and incident management.
Requirements: Servers covered under this service must be under ITS management via a Total IT service or Amplify service.
How It Works
1. Onboarding & Definition
At onboarding, we work with the client to explicitly define the scope and controls for Advanced Server Patch Management, including:
- Identification of in scope servers
- Documented patching schedule and approved consistent maintenance windows or client defined time of execution.
- A predefined post patch test plan specific to each server or application
- Confirmation of backup coverage and recovery readiness prior to patching. ITS requires read-only access to confirm backup status if ITS is not providing the Server Backup services and management.
- Confirmation that ITS can initiate an ITS supported hypervisor-based snapshot prior to applying patches for more rapid recovery in the event of a failed patch.
Note: These elements are documented and maintained as part of the client’s service entitlement.
2. Pre‑Patch Planning & Client Communication
For each patch cycle, ITS performs advanced planning that includes:
- Review of applicable Windows updates relevant to the specific server role and application
- Client notification of the patching plan, ahead of deployment
- Confirmation of a viable, current backup exists prior to patch execution.
Note: No patches are applied without confirmation that prerequisite safeguards are in place.
3. Controlled Patch Deployment
Patches are applied manually and, in a sequence, aligned to vendor or application requirements, rather than through our standard, automated deployment process.
This controlled approach allows for:
- Sequencing based on application dependencies
- Intermediate validation between steps when required
- Immediate pause or rollback if abnormalities are observed
4. Post‑Patch Validation
After patch deployment, ITS executes the predefined test plan, which may include:
- Service availability checks
- Application or role specific validation (as documented during onboarding)
- Review of system health indicators and logs
Note: Successful validation is confirmed before the maintenance activity is closed.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How does this differ from standard patch management? Standard patch management relies on baseline internal review and automated deployment. Advanced Windows Patch Management adds client communication, manual execution, controlled sequencing, backup verification, and post‑patch testing for systems where failure risk is materially higher.
- What systems is this service intended for? This service is designed for Windows servers hosting:
- Line of business or revenue‑impacting applications
- Regulated or compliance sensitive workloads
- Legacy or tightly coupled systems
- Environments requiring explicit change control
- It is not intended to replace standard patching for general-purpose servers.
- Are updates and upgrades included? Included: Microsoft Windows updates and security patches. Not included: Major version upgrades, feature upgrades, or platform migrations. These are delivered as separate billable projects.
- Are third-party application patches included? No. This service applies to Windows operating system patching only. Third-party application patching, database updates, and application upgrades are out of scope unless explicitly contracted.
- How often are patches applied? Patch cycles are typically monthly, aligned to Microsoft’s release cadence, unless:
- Accelerated patching is required due to a critical security vulnerability as designated by the vendor
- A client approved exception or deferral has been documented
- Can clients exclude specific patches? Yes. Patch exclusions may be documented for compatibility, operational, or business reasons. Exclusions must be formally approved and may affect security posture.
- How is this service priced and entitled? Advanced Windows Patch Management is entitled per server and must be explicitly documented in the client’s agreement or service addendum. $150 per month per server.
- What is required from the client?
- Designation of in scope servers
- Approval of maintenance windows
- Confirmation of testing expectations
- Maintenance of supported configurations and licensing
- What happens if an issue occurs after patching? If an issue is identified during post patch testing, ITS will respond under the defined service scope. Application level remediation, vendor engagement, or restore operations beyond validation are handled according to the client’s broader support agreement or as a separate project if required.
